Over the last 20 years more than 22,000 Karenni people have been displaced from their homes in Karenni (Kayah) state in Myanmar. Many more live as internally displaced persons within Karenni state.

Education and employment opportunities for those in the camps are limited so few Karenni know about human rights and how to protect their interests.

There are over 1 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Amongst this number are nearly 400,000 children which has placed a large burden on Lebanese state schools.

Only an estimated 30% of the Syrian refugee school-aged children are receiving an education. In addition to barriers to access and other challenges, a significant obstacle to integration is language: Syrian schools are taught in Arabic, while Lebanese public schools incorporate both French and English.

The Karenni Social Development Center (SDC), based on the Thai/Burma border, will trial a microfinance project that will help the organization generate a small income, and enable the students to learn valuable vocational skills. The SDC will set up a small café and snack shop, built by SDC staff and external labourers and ran by students, where members of the Karenni Refugee Camp #1 community will be able to eat traditional Karenni food.

This programme will work with 200 young, urban refugees to help them settle in their host community in Nairobi, as well as empower them to be able to support themselves financially. Through the Young Refugees Empowerment Programme (YREP), refugees will be provided with basic literacy training, legal aid clinics, education and life skills training and opportunities for work.

Agency: Karen Women’s Organisation (KWO)

This project will supply Baby Kits which include laundry soap, body soap, baby wraps, clippers and a health message to 8 different sites reaching at least 2,400 mothers and their newborn babies. These kits along with the health message pamphlets will spread valuable information to women who may otherwise not have the knowledge to healthily care for themselves and their babies after birth.

Community prevention education reaches beyond those addicted to their families, friends and neighbors. The work of the DARE network reaches thousands of people in camps on the Thai-Myanmar border and inside Myanmar.

The Prevention, Education and Training program will provide treatment cycles, prevention education to schools and communities and train addiction workers.

This project will train women in the Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan to contribute to the camps monthly magazine “The Road” as well as produce an issue exclusively by and for women. The training will be done in 4 different workshops focusing on editing, journalism and design for two groups of 25-30 women.
