Transparency in NPOs

An important element of NPOs is transparency. This ensures organisations are accountable for their actions, shortcomings or setbacks. A key part of this transparency, are the donor relations of NPOs. Donors are partners in the mission of the NPO, not just financial contributors, and maintaining transparent and ethical communication with them, helps to build long-term relationships. This communication needs a high level of accountability, that the money donated is being used in the most effective and efficient way as possible, as well as ensuring the funds are being invested where they state they are. By keeping donors updated and involved ensure that donors feel valued and connected to the mission.

As an NPO, REI meets these requirements. We operate according to a strict code of accountability and transparency, showing where, when and how the donations are making a difference. We assess all funding applications against strict criteria. Recipients of funds must provide references, audited accounts and written reports. REI undertakes field visits to assess the situation at first hand. This means that REI members see for themselves the benefits of the funding and then report back on the situation when they are back home. On Field visits REI meets with alumni of the programmes to monitor the long-term impacts of the projects, and how they will continue to benefit generations to come. This ensures that resources and donations are used effectively and sustainably and has a significant impact for the communities of displaced individuals and families, particularly as more emerging crises arise. In doing this, REI opens space for introspection and development of the organisation.
