A Journey of Empowerment and Connection

June 4, 2025
In February 2025, Refugees Empowerment International (REI) led a transformative field trip to the Thai-Myanmar border, where individual and corporate donors witnessed the power of refugee-led initiatives supported by REI. The trip offered a rare opportunity to experience how grassroots, community-driven programs are building sustainable futures for displaced people—while offering profound insights for participants.
The delegation visited three key programs that exemplify REI’s commitment to empowering refugees through locally managed solutions:
- The Karenni Social Development Centre trains Karenni refugee youth in leadership, critical thinking, human rights, and environmental awareness. The students’ passion and professionalism left a strong impression on the group, revealing the deep commitment these young people have to shaping their communities’ future.
- The DARE Network (Addiction Prevention and Education) provides trauma-informed addiction prevention and treatment. Visitors saw how the network’s holistic support for families and communities using culturally relevant methods strengthens long-term wellbeing and self-reliance.
- The Maternal Health Awareness and Baby Kit Project, run by the Karen Women’s Organization, equips expectant mothers with health knowledge and baby kits to improve maternal and infant outcomes, providing a lifeline in camps where access to healthcare is limited.
Personal Reflections from Participants
Steve Martin, Executive Creative Director at Eat Creative, reflected on the importance of “rethinking aid” and noted how REI’s refugee-led model respects and utilizes local expertise rather than imposing outside solutions. “These are not passive recipients of aid,” he wrote, “but people actively creating futures for themselves.” Read more
Tove Kinooka, Co-founder and Director of Enteleco and Global Perspectives, found striking parallels between refugee-led projects and sustainable workplace practices. She praised the environmental awareness and strong female leadership she saw in action. “This isn’t just aid; it’s innovation born of necessity,” she observed. Read more
Why These Field Trips Matter
These immersive visits serve a dual purpose: they introduce the tangible results of REI’s funding to supporters and provide a platform for refugee communities to proudly share their progress. Refugees are not just recipients—they are leaders, teachers, and problem-solvers.
Participants, in turn, gain contextual intelligence and often draw meaningful connections between the challenges faced by refugee communities and their own work environments. These experiences break down barriers, foster empathy, and inspire new approaches to leadership and sustainability.
Join the Next Trip
REI will host more field trips, open to individuals and companies through sponsorship. Sponsorships cover accommodation, in-country transport, and a donation directly to the programs visited. Trips require a six-month lead time—so those interested should get in touch now to plan for upcoming visits. Come see how sustainable support creates real change, and walk away with insights that stay with you long after you return home.
