Changing Realities, Unbroken Spirits

Lessons from field visits
REI conducted a field visit to the Thai–Myanmar border, a region it has supported for more than 20 years, in March 2026. The team was joined by supporters and ambassadors who brought renewed perspective, as participants asked thoughtful questions that highlighted realities often taken for granted: the restrictions on freedom many people face, the ingenuity within communities and the dignity of those living in displacement.
Each visit continues to inspire, shaped by ongoing changes both within Myanmar and across the camps. Shifts in funding, including significant cuts to support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), have created new challenges for many groups. At the same time, new ideas and systems are emerging, reflecting communities’ ability to adapt. A notable development this year has been a change in demographics, with more young people participating in projects and initiatives.
Despite difficult conditions, there are strong signs of hope and commitment. Many individuals who have had the opportunity to study outside the camps are choosing to return and work with their communities. Some even forgo the chance to resettle with family in other countries in order to contribute locally. Younger generations are increasingly connected to the wider world through digital technology, while maintaining deep ties to their communities.
Across all generations, resilience and determination remain evident, even after decades of camp life. Personal stories underscore this resilience.
In Thailand, John, who once struggled with addiction, completed a treatment program and transformed his life. He is now a respected community member and serves on several camp committees. Although he experienced significant health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and is physically weaker, his commitment to supporting others remains strong.
In Nairobi, meanwhile, on another REI project, Bizimana built a thriving food business from a small shack with just two employees into a larger, 24-hour operation employing fellow refugees. During the pandemic, his business was raided, forcing him to start again from the beginning. Despite this setback, he remains determined to rebuild, support his family and continue contributing to his community.
These examples reflect the strength and perseverance found across displaced communities. Ongoing support from organisations like REI plays a critical role in sustaining these efforts and ensuring resources are used wisely and effectively.
Your generosity sustains resilient communities, empowers returning youth and enables individuals to rebuild lives with dignity, opportunity and hope.
