Emergency Assistance for Zimbabwean Refugees in South Africa

December 1, 2007

In 2007, tens of thousands of Zimbabweans fled into neighbouring countries due to food shortages, near-total collapse of the domestic economy, and continued political repression in Zimbabwe. This project provided emergency assistance to refugees arriving in South Africa allowing them a smooth transition into the new community.

Community Health Promotion Initiative in Juba, Southern Sudan

November 1, 2007

The influx of returnees to Juba in 2007 was causing severe pressure on housing services and an already overstretched infrastructure. 21 years of civil war destroyed much of the region’s infrastructure and so standards of sanitation were very poor.

Food Security in Al-Zannah Village, Southern Gaza

November 1, 2007

This project was for poor female-headed households living in Al-Zannah village in Bani Suhaila Municipality, Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip. 80 low-income families were provided with an animal production unit each, including a pen, 10 hens, and a rooster.

School Support Project in Ombasi, Yei Country, Southern Sudan

June 5, 2007

After 20 years of civil war, the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in January 2005 between the Sudanese government and southern rebel groups provided an opportunity for displaced persons and refugees to return home or resettle in south Sudan.

Library Activities in Refugee Camps on the Thai-Burma Border

The movement of Burmese nationals into Thailand began in the 1970s. Over 120,000 live in 5 camps along the border of the two countries still described as “temporary shelters” by the authorities. Others live as migrants in the community subject to sudden deportations and harassment by police and local people.
