Our Commitment to Sustainability

REI, in alliance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, aims to invoke positive, enduring community-led change. Read on to learn how the projects we support contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education

TARGET 4.2: Equal access to pre-primary education

  • The Lebanese Kindergarten Project provides 110 vulnerable Palestinian and Syrian refugee children with pre-primary education and protection in a community-based program. 
  • 5 psychosocial support home visits are carried out annually.
    • Observations may be used to curtail programming and address the specific social-emotional/physical needs of refugee youth. 

A community outreach success story: 

“Student A had difficulties walking and writing. The Program Coordinator and A’s parents created a special program to address Student A’s needs: incorporating walking, biking, handwriting exercises, and dough exercises for hand strength. A’s parents reported significant improvement to A’s coordination and overall sense of self-confidence. Student A now participates in class activities and is set to graduate.”

TARGET 4.3: Equal access to affordable technical, vocational, and higher education

  • Funding to Karenni Social Development Center (KSDC) covers training in community-based technical skills, such as International Law, Office Management, Report Writing, Proposal and Project Development.
    • Students also do internships with local CBOs to develop community involvement.

TARGET 4.5: Eliminate all discrimination in education

  • The Lebanese Kindergarten Project prepares anti-bullying activities reduce tensions and encourage a cohesive learning environment between Lebanese Palestinian and Syrian refugee children.

TARGET 4.6: Universal Literacy and Numeracy

  • The Urban Refugees Entrepreneurship Program in Nairobi, Kenya provides literacy ​​and numeracy courses to 20 young refugees working to set up their own businesses. 

TARGET 4.a: Increase the supply of qualified teachers in developing countries

  • The Lebanese Kindergarten project employs 12 teachers and teaching assistants from the refugee and IDP (internally displaced persons) community
    • Monthly staff training is conducted on conflict resolution, communication, anti-bullying strategies, positive parent communication and trauma-informed teaching techniques.
      • As refugees themselves they are able to identify with the specific trauma concerns of Syrian refugee children and families.
